2DO BACHILLER. 18TH TO 22ND MAY 2020

KEY TO LAST WEEK’S TASKS
Listening Test 2
        Science Fiction
1            Girl:   So, how was the film?
Boy:   Well, you know … I’m not really into science fiction.
Girl:   So, why did you go then?
Boy:   Because of my sister. It was her birthday, so she got to choose the film this time.
Girl:   Well, hopefully you’ll enjoy the next film you see.
Boy:   Oh, I didn’t say I didn’t enjoy the film.
2            Girl:   Did you see the video Keith uploaded on his Facebook page?
Boy:   Which one? He’s always posting something.
Girl:   I mean the one showing strange lights in the sky last night. Everyone’s talking about it.
Boy:   Yeah, I saw it too. I can’t believe so many people believe it’s a sign from outer space. I mean maybe there is life on another planet, but …
Girl:   So, what do you think it is then?
Boy:   I don’t know. Maybe lights from an aeroplane or even lightning from far away.
3           Boy:   Mission: Space is a simulation of space travel to Mars. If you don’t like small crowded spaces and are afraid of the dark, this ride is not for you. People had warned me about Mission: Space. They said that they’d felt ill for the rest of the day, but I didn’t believe them. I’ve been on so many frightening rides before, so I didn’t think it would be a big deal. Well, they were right! I felt ill for hours after the ride ended. It was the worst amusement park ride of my life!
4            Girl:   If you’re in the area, The Kennedy Space Center is a great place to spend a day. We spent seven hours there, with
a short break for lunch, and had plenty to do. We took a two-hour bus tour round the Center. That may seem long, but our guide was really interesting and the time passed quite quickly. They also offer “Lunch with an Astronaut” which was really cool. We were lucky as we were a small group, so everyone got a chance to ask their questions. The food was a bit disappointing, but all in all it was an interesting day and well worth the trip.
5          Man:   What’s that programme you’re watching?
       Woman:   Doctor Who.
Man:   I used to watch that when I was a kid! I didn’t realise it was still on.
Woman:   It is. Hard to believe isn’t it? It’s the oldest and longest running science-fiction programme in the world! The first episode was in 1963.
Man:   Wow! That’s before my dad was born!
6          Man:   I’d like to introduce you to our next speaker, Professor Brian White. If you’re a science-fiction fan, you’ve probably read books or watched films about time travel. I know I was always fascinated with the idea. Of course, travelling backwards or forwards in time always seemed like fantasy, but our next speaker believes it could become a reality in the next 50 years. So, let’s hear how Professor White thinks this can happen.
7          Man:   The Night Sky is next here on Channel 8, after the news. In this week’s episode, presenter Robert Parker, looks at the telescope from its invention in 17th century Holland to the enormous EELT telescope currently being constructed in the Arizona desert and scheduled to open in 2024. And if you missed episode seven, don’t forget that it’s still available on our website until the end of the month.
8    Woman:   Well, a lot of people ask me what we eat in space and they’re quite surprised to hear that we get to eat ordinary food like chocolate cake and even pizza. But what people forget to ask us is how we eat. Because of zero gravity, everything flies around aboard the spaceship including the food. So our food is very well packed in plastic bags and served on trays with special magnets to hold everything down, And of course, we drink everything out of a bag with a straw.
Answers:   1.   c           2.   c          3.   a          4.   b          5.   a          6.   a          7.   b          8.   b

Listening Test 3
        Employment
1    Woman:   So, how did the interview go?
Man:   OK, I think. It’s hard to know. I couldn’t really tell from the interviewer’s reaction.
Woman:   I know what you mean. They often sit there with this expression that doesn’t really give anything away.
Man:   Yes. She just asked questions and sat there nodding and saying “mmm” when I answered them. I think I gave good answers.
Woman:   Oh well, there’s no point in worrying about it now. It’s over. You’ll hear from them soon enough.
2          Man:   It was really hard when I first started working full-time. I wasn’t used to working so many hours. I had to get up at 6.30 and I didn’t get home until after 19.00. I hardly had time to eat. I was so tired by the end of the day that I had no energy to do anything. I hardly saw my friends. But things are better now. I’m still working full-time, but my company moved and I don’t have to travel so far. I don’t spend so much time travelling and I’m not as tired.
3    Woman:   In the last couple of years, I’ve taken on more responsibilities in the company. I’m responsible for our website, which now attracts a lot more visitors. Our online sales have also increased by 20% since I took over the site. Now that I’ve been doing this for a while, I’d like to discuss increasing my salary, so it reflects the contributions I’ve been making to the company.
4          Man:   You know what annoys me about looking for a job? I must have sent out at least 50 CVs. Fifty! Do you know how much time that takes? I spent ages on the Internet looking for job ads, researching companies and e-mailing people to ask if I can send them my CV. And that’s not including how long it takes to write the CV. Then these companies don’t even bother to get back to me! They could at least tell me they have no vacancies at the moment.
5   Woman:   Guess what? I got that job I applied for!
Man:   Really? The one at that fashion company? That’s amazing! I’ve heard it’s really hard to get a job there.
Woman:   I know. But I don’t know if I should take the job.
Man:   What’s the problem? You said you really wanted to work there.
Woman:   I do. But now I’ve been offered a place to study fashion design at university. I didn’t think I’d get in, but I did.
The studies are full-time, so I won’t be able to do both.
6           Joe:   Don’t tell me you’re wearing those old jeans to the interview!
Matt:   Joe, the company I’m going to is very casual. I hear that even the managing director wears jeans. He never wears a suit.
Joe:   That doesn’t mean you should wear them for a first interview! You still want to make a good impression.
Matt:   What about my black trousers – the new ones?
Joe:   Those are better. They’re casual, but also smart.
7          Man:   And another thing – if you’re planning to take a holiday, please make sure to submit a request to your manager well in advance. We make every effort to take our employees’ needs into account, but we are a business and we do have schedules and deadlines to meet. If you tell us just two weeks before that you want to go on holiday, we may not be able to give you permission.
8     Woman:   I live in a small town and there aren’t many job opportunities. Many of my friends moved to the city to find work.
I wanted to leave too, but then I was offered a job here as a doctor’s receptionist. I didn’t want to take it at first.
I wanted to see what it was like living in the city, but I decided to try the job and it’s been great! So, for now, I won’t be moving to the city, but at least I won’t miss my family.
