ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF THE USE OF GUNS IN OUR COUNTRY

Nowadays, as opposed to the laws and legislations in general in the USA, our country, Spain, does not allow the adquisition of a gun or any other weapon unless you have gone through several psychological tests to prove that you are not crazy or out of your mind, but a trustworthy person. Laws in Spain allow citizens to a have a firearm in order to hunt. However, what if we were permitted the ownership or possession of a gun at home in our daily lives? Let’s see the pros and cons of this issue.

On the one hand, the most important advantage concerning the safety of the citizens would be that we can feel safer and more secure because we could take care of our family in case there is a robbery at home. Furthermore, in the presence of a dangerous situation or feeling of threat (not only at home but also in the Street) we could use the gun to defend ourselves and others. It would be so useful in that situation. Imagine for example that you are leaving the bank and you have just withdrawn money; somebody suddenly approaches with a knife and threatens you because he or she wants your money. In that case, you could turna round, point at him or her with your gun and shoot in self-defence.

On the other hand, if the gun or weapon fell into the wrong person, the consequences would be terrible. The person owning a gun must have a sound mind, otherwise he or she could use it in  violent crimes against other people. In addition, in America guns are such a dangerous object that people who commit suicide due to depression or stress find it very easy.

To sum up, this is a controversial issue since there are different points of view about the advantages to support the ownership of weapons and the disadvantages to be totally against them in our society. Therefore, it is a topic of personal taste and opinion after all.
